A Narakeet alternative for subtitle cues.

Recastr turns an SRT, VTT, or ASS file into speech locked to those cue times, speeds a long line up to 1.5× without cutting it, and clones a voice from a short clip you have permission to use. The free plan includes 10 minutes. Narakeet’s public pricing, as of November 2026, starts at $0.20 per minute for a small pack.

Try the same cues in Recastr

  1. 1

    Upload the subtitle file

SRT, WebVTT, and ASS are read directly. The cue times stay the times the speech is built against.

  2. 2

Pick a catalog voice or a clone

A clone is a 15–120 second reference clip. You can keep 10, on the free plan as well as a paid one.

  3. 3

    Generate, then compare the rate

Pro is $0.036 per minute when you use the month. The 30-minute pack is $0.10 per minute and does not expire.

Free accounts

Subtitle formats in their guide
Narakeet’s subtitle-to-audio guide documents direct upload of SRT and WebVTT, and speeding sections so they meet the timestamps. Recastr also reads ASS, and caps combined speed-up so a line is not cut off.

When people look at both

The script is already an ASS file

Aegisub and fansub scripts store the speaker in the Name column. Recastr reads that file directly, along with SRT and VTT.

ASS to audio

You would rather pay monthly

Pro is $9 for 250 minutes in the month you use them. That is a different shape from prepaying $500 for 10,000 minutes that sit until you need them.

Recastr pricing

You want a clone before you pay

Upload a reference clip of 15–120 seconds and use it on the free minutes. Cloning does not debit voiceover minutes, and the cap is 10 clones per account.

The job is a short SRT

A 30-minute Recastr pack is $3. Narakeet’s 30-minute pack is $6. Hear the cues first on the free minutes, then buy only if the read is the one you want.

SRT to speech

Narakeet also times SRT and VTT

Their own guide describes uploading SRT or WebVTT and speeding sections up when the voice would miss the timestamps. Recastr is aimed at that same job, and also at ASS files, a 1.5× speed ceiling that does not chop the line, self-serve cloning, and a free minute balance. Narakeet is also a script and slides studio — PowerPoint, markdown, and video scenes — which Recastr is not.

Long lines stay whole

Speed-up, including the voice’s own pace control, stops at 1.5×. Past that, the line keeps playing and fills the pause before the next cue. The words are not trimmed to force the timestamp.

Cloning is a clip in your voice list

Narakeet’s FAQ, linked from their pricing page, describes adding your own pre-recorded audio, and connecting a custom brand voice from Amazon, IBM, or Microsoft on a custom plan. Recastr’s clone is the reference clip itself: 15–120 seconds, up to 10 per account, assigned like any other voice.

Does Narakeet already turn subtitles into timed audio?
Yes. Their subtitle guide documents SRT and WebVTT uploads and automatic speed-up so sections meet the timestamps. Recastr does that job for SRT, VTT, and ASS, with a combined speed cap of 1.5× and no cutting of the line when the cap is hit.
Can I clone a voice, or only pick from a catalog?
In Recastr you can do both. A clone needs a 15–120 second clip you have permission to use, and an account holds up to 10. Narakeet’s FAQ describes pre-recorded audio in a project, and custom brand voices through Amazon, IBM, or Microsoft on a custom plan, which is a different arrangement.
What is free on each product?
Recastr includes 10 minutes of voiceover on the free plan. Narakeet’s pricing table lists free accounts as 20 conversions, with commercial use marked no, a 1 KB maximum audio script, and no free previews. As of November 2026.
When is a Narakeet pack the cheaper shape?
When you want a large balance that never expires and you will not use 250 minutes every month. Their largest published pack is $0.05 per minute, prepaid at $500. Recastr Pro is $0.036 per minute only for the month you are paying for. For a short job, Recastr’s 30-minute pack is $3, against $6 for Narakeet’s 30 minutes.
